Harun Zankel, Boston, Massachusetts (2022)
Artist statement from Harun: Over the past year I experienced a pretty rough moment, beyond covid. During that time I had a handful of friends and family who were there for me in many ways and really helped me through some dark times. I am now mostly through that moment and I genuinely attribute the stability and resilience I was able to maintain to the people who supported me. We all need our community in both good and bad times.
Harun Zankel is a lettering artist, designer, and advertising creative director. As a kid he dabbled in graffiti, which is where his interest in letter forms started. Throughout his commercial work in advertising and design Harun consistently uses bold typography and lettering to enhance the messaging. In the past 5 years he’s built a lettering practice with both client and personal projects that span across murals, screen printed posters, social content, album covers, skateboards, and tattoos. Much of his work is focused around political commentary or simply expressing the human experience. The lettering style is typically in a hand written script which is meant to connect with people through the imperfections energy of the letterforms. His work has received awards from the Type Directors Club and has been featured in various art galleries.
