Jojo Stickers, Lisbon, Portugal 2024
Artist Bio: Jojo_stickers is an artist that tries to communicate through her art powerful details of life through image, color, and lexicon. Raising questions about the boundaries of art display and placement. Where is an art gallery? how to talk about feelings and complicated thoughts with strangers that pass by. What limitations do we put on art if we confine it to specific spaces? Viewers gain insight to the beauty of humanity when engaging with the stickers or the paste up or the murals that are created. Mostly part of the Bristol mural collective, the London art house and now in Lisbon in creation with a group of artists, still nameless, the ones that got together to paint the: you are not alone murals. The highest purpose for me as an artist and curator is to remind ourselves and others about, why is it so important to create street art and be " there" for who ever comes across Jojo's art, with empowered quotes and vibrant colours that makes you feel good or think in a deeper level, creating hopefully a more harmonious world all around where people talk and share their feelings.
Artist Statement: I'm grateful I came across the, You are not alone murals page, as soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to do it right away! I contacted the 2 amazing women that started it all and got together in Lisbon to get together with another artist, this was done with the help of: yes you can spray, I contacted them and they said yes right away. In a week we had 10 artists join us to create. Just this powerful feeling of solidarity, love and care just made me reinforce the message of why it is so important to create and paint with others, giving the sense of community, helping the community. Personally, I have a lot of friends that suffer from depression and their mental health is often compromised with not having enough help or someone to talk to. This is a constant awareness I feel that not feeling alone is so important. Recently I had to call the cops and help a girl that I didn't know, that was in front of me in the middle of street, trying to commit suicide by letting a car run over her and that was just something I have never been confronted with, so I sat down with her and talked and told her she wasn't alone and that like me other people care. After I thought about it all a lot and I understood that like her unfortunately there are many others that not only need help in the moment but on the next days after that. So that motivated me even more, to create more murals with other artists and hopefully helping people want to seek help when they see one of the murals, as most likely some wont have have the energy to go find help, so I am hopeful that maybe if they see a wall or if someone tells them about this amazing mural that they saw with a lot of art, saying : you are not alone, maybe they won't feel that alone, so this is why I did it, and I will keep creating more and more murals and calling all the artists to join, wherever I go around the world. I am very thankful to be part of so much kindness and love. Thank you.
