Kerrin and Cal Parkinson, Portland, ME
Artist statement: This mural is about finding a connection, your support system. The mural was primarily a way for me and my son Cal to connect on a deeper level as well as a promotion of mental health support and awareness for our local community. The original concept of mental health support from pets and leaning on other things besides humans was Cal's idea and the mural was created by both of us. Many people lean on their pets for comfort and security. We have two amazing cats that we love and they have definitely helped us through many difficult times.
The overall message is that no mattter what you are going through, you can find others who care and are going through or have gone through a similiar situation. Gravitate towards those people and the comfort of your sweet pets and hobbies etc... to get you through the tough times. Also, even though sometimes these connections may feel out of reach, like on a different level, know that we are all connected.
Just don’t give up, you can find your people, your path through this galaxy, your way to mental health and happiness.
